The Blue Book defines the curriculum of Gastronterology and Hepatology training. The Blue Book aims to harmonise the training in gastroenterology across European countries by setting the standards in Gastroenterology education and practice and by implementing quality control in all parts of GI training. The Blue Book ‘s ultimate goal is to help the free movement of trainees across different institutions and countries in Europe. It comprises The Training Programme, The Core Curriculum, Advanced modules, Basic Competencies in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Generic Competencies, Competencies in Endoscopy, The Assessment of Training programme and the Trainee.

The acquisition of the competencies needs to be assessed by objective methods and fully documented. It is advised that the trainees' theoretical knowledge, competences and all other activities be recorded on a “log book” throughout the entire training period.

European countries are encouraged to either use their national training curriculum which should conform to the curriculum designed by ESBGH  or directly adopt the Blue Book as a guide to the training programme.
